Awww... Hope that guy was alright...

Is it better to hope he lived although he would have had to have LOTS of operations and skin grafts, or hope he died and was put out of his misery?

It's hard to think what it'd be like in that position until it happens to you.

Really I think this story says more to not be a tall boy wearing a tall pointy metal hat more than anything...
MAYBE, it gave him super powers and to this day has been a sort of Male Storm (the X-man, Storm)

You know, there really isn't any need to write "*Bump*" if you don't get the conversation... just.... don't. post? Seeing as there are at least 3 other people who post, someone else is SURE to post eventually...

Beth, a "bump" is only used when a topic has become inactive and you want to revive said topic by letting people know it's still there.

You seem to be missing that point as it's still an active topic.

*face bumps* I know what a *bump* is for. Why can't I use it to let you know I'm still here or something? Things like 1337 wouldn't exist if people always used what was expected of them. Why write hax or haxzor when you can just write hack so everyone understand?

Because writing hacks as hax and using an already defined word for something else are completely different things, it'd be like someone coming out tomorrow and saying lol is now lots of love or some shit and then getting angry when other people dont understand the specific meaning that person is using at the time.

Therefore we keep internet slang stationary, especially those words or abbreviations that are used very frequently in every place on the internet, for as long as possible to avoid confusion. Perhaps a new meaning for bump will eventually come about and replace the old one but for now it has a set definition that people understand and use and it wont be changed unless there is a huge movement to change it or everyone stops using it for a while.

Also this thread is stupid.

But going by that, there would be no reason to do anything different or new since we already have something for it...

Well yes but english is such a massively varied and complex language why would you want to take an already well estabalished and very frequently used word and give it an extra meaning so people will then have to work out what type of "bump" it is from the context of the written text and/or time of posting. Instead why cant we just leave bump the way it is. There's nothing wrong with it so why make them more complicated, if theres a meaning that needs a new word then invent one and spread it around like "fwoomp" for this topic goes over my head bump.

The word bump works. Everyone knows what it means and what it does. Sure language should be allowed to change and differ as time goes by but why would you want to add in new meanings to a word that already works really well, is all i'm saying.

Why would we need to make a new word for a meaning if one already exists then?

Lol meaning lots of love worked well enough, so why change it to laugh out loud? Things change even if there's no need for it to change.

Re: Looking for an emotional night in?

You know, you haven't actually answered any of his questions...
But i have to agree, even if it were real words... It'd be like paying something (In britain) and they'd say, "That'll be 5 pounds, please" and then you punch them 5 times. In the context used, it meant money, and that is normally what people think when they here "Pound ()" (in britain at the least)... but you decided to use the lesser used meaning... when paying for something
Crap example, but the point is still pretty obvious of, if you wanted to say, "Face bump" just say... "Face bump"?
Face palm is, "facepalm" not "palm"
Lol was really, always Laugh out loud... lots of love was only really used by mums... meaning some sticky situations sometimes, (e.g. "Aunt ____ has died, haven't told the others yet. LOL. mom x")
Another weird thing is... I think we know if you're here or not, what with those OTHER topics on the forum that you're posting in.... if this were the only active topic, then yeah, you could've given a less... relevant post but WHATEVER!
I like how you commented on this being the longest topic without going off topic, but then you managed to succeed in destroying any ties to the topic...

Also from reading your posts it just seems you're going "Why do we have abbreviations when we already have the words." mostly because the phrases they abbreviate are long... and still quite common...

/Rant

Also, WTF is a face bump?

Lol we used to do this back when we had the good ole irish pounds (punts). We'd say something like "I bet ya 5 pounds I can jump over that river there" and the other guy would be like "no you cant". Then when we fell in the river or w/e and they'd say right give me five pounds we'd hit em 5 times lol Very Happy good times probably why we started saying fiver and tenner etc.

Also I'm fairly sure lol started off as laugh out loud and then some people (probably just trolling) started saying it was lots of love hoping to start some lulzy misunderstandings as trolls are wont to do. Of course lots of love didn't take off because people were already using lol all of the time to have 1 specific meaning and throwing lots of love as lol with the same meaning as laugh out loud then you will have to in many cases clarify with the poster which lol they mean.

Mozillo wrote: Why would we need to make a new word for a meaning if one already exists then?

*Sigh* Bump has 1 meaning in the context of a post that's very short and simple. We all know bump means that this topic has become inactive and I want to make it active again.

Okay perfect example of a phrase that probably should have stayed with one or two meanings

I'll take care of you. <- I mean wow just look at that. What bright spark came up with the new meaning for care, which used to mean look after and keep safe, that would mean I'll go you kill and get rid of your body in a dumpster. Although in this case the term became so well used thanks to mob movies and what have you that it was accepted into our society quickly. But I'm sure conversations like this one sprung up during its transition into everyday use.

but perhaps we did bump a bit too much, we should be allowed bump our own new meanings into bump if we bump. Then bump can bump bump and bump bump bump bump, bump.

This is bullshit. Whenever Kev or Chris post something funny or off the wall like they normally do, people go along with it. When I do it, it becomes a logic debate. What? Am I not allowed to say something funny or off the wall? Are Kev and Chris the only ones that can do that without having people say that's impossible or stupid?

Since it's such a problem for me to do something different and something I felt like doing because I could, I'll just post boringly and without personality. Or just stop posting altogether.

I didn't realize it was illegal to bump something without using it correctly. My sincerest apoligies.
