Japan!!!

Post  Solent on Thu Jul 09, 2009 1:07 pm

Day 1

Arrival:
Plane food actually not bad this journey, wasn't sat next to a fatty which was also more pleasent, though the real problems came when i got into Japan.

The chap at the foreign people check-in wasn't happy that i wrote in the "address while in Japan" box, "variable" due to the fact i'm not going to be staying in any one position for too long. I explained this to him in English (which fair enough he couldnt get) and then Japanese (when he found out i spoke a bit he went into hyper mode and started spitting out words in a whirlwind), eventually he settled for my first accom address, as i told him i couldn't recall off the top of my head the addresses of several hostels/hotels/flats and relatives i'd be living with.

As a sailor i get alot of rope burn in the hands from handeling all the ropes, thus rubbing away large portions of my fingerprints. This made me all the more suspicious as their finger print machine wasn't picking up my prints (managed to bypass it eventually by rolling the fingers around till it found a spot that wasn't rubbed smoothed).

I'd also cut my hair short, so this bloke descided the best way to compare my features with the passport photo which had me with longer hair, was to photograph me multiple times Shocked

Next problem: my luggage was also suspicious (long cardboard box i made up to carry all my sailing bits, including sail, sailing clothes, tillers, and other peculiar metal parts integral to the boat). 10 minutes i spent trying hard to explain what was inside, which to be honest would be hard to do in english let alone japanese if one isnt familiar with sailing equipment. So i relented and let them open the thing up (it was plastered neatly in tape)

Finally got a bus to Shinjuku, a main district in Tokyo, then took a series of trains followed by a 20 minute walk to my gramps place. I was literally sweltering, us Brits aren't used to a really humid 34 degrees, and whilst lugging around three bags totalling 25 kilos, one could say i got a few funny looks!

Finally here though, jet lagged like hell (Japan is 9hours ahead of Britain)

On the bright side back to feeling tall! I'm 6ft which is perhaps just above avg for a brit, but in japan you feel like a basketball player! The few people i saw today that were anywhere near my height were very lean. So if anyones lacking in the height department, Japan's your place! Razz

Hope that made sense, with only 4 hours sleep under my belt from the last 30 hours........tbh i don't where im going with this......mmmm.......food time Razz

When the man was taking pictures was he going "Oh yeah! The camera loves you! Oh yes! Give me anger! Give me cute! Oh you're a naughty boy!"?

nah i just got the weird guy, and i gave him angry, angry, and slightly more angry picture poses Smile

The lady next to me told the guy who was dealing with her that she was staying with Bob (no joke), but she didn't know his address or second name. That was apparently good enough!

Now the fun begins though!

I'm still trying to picture you walking down a road/street with a large box either under arm or on your back....

Haha no haven't seen anything like that quite yet, though in a place called akihabara, you get cosplayers walking the streets like it's no big deal (some of the costumes are eye boggling, or stomach churning depending on the wearer Razz ).

There are big hornets, but i havn't seen any as of yet!

Day 2.

Post  Solent on Fri Jul 10, 2009 3:07 pm

haha yea exactly chris, anywho on with day 2.
More of a rest day for me, never intended on doing much, so spent most of the time at my gramps house trying not to fall asleep. I did go out in persuit of some high conc. caffeine drinks (i dont drink tea/coffee) and managed to get:

1) A jelly drink, which you're spose to shake in the can to break it up into peices before drinking the contents, i forgot to do so, so it was a bit of a job getting the jelly to flow out. Razz
2) Alcoholic coca cola, in a beer alcoholic kinda way which was weird, wasn't ID'd which is unusual for me, all the british shops and bouncers etc. seem to think i'm 18 minus Razz
3) Redbull, what i set out for.

Also visited the 60pence shop (by todays rates), bought a few bits and peices e.g. socks Razz

ah also had visiting relatives! (all my cousins are teenage girls from 17 downwards so what i can talk to them about is fairly limited:- my sisters job normally XD )

Day 3&4

Post  Solent on Sun Jul 12, 2009 1:31 pm

Half jap, half english Razz

Day 3 summary:

Went to akihabara, the electric goods capital with a freind who wanted to get dragon quest that was released yesterday, hence large queues and lots of mental people, bought an awesome set of earphones (outside noise reducing ones) for a cool 15, had a good walk around akihabara, observing the good lookng cosplayers and the fat ones from a safe distance. Invited by freind to a firework festival next week with some of his mates, of whom amoung are some good looking girls apparently (he's just separated from his gf hence a sudden interest in the more intelligent sex) (that's girls btw)

Day 4 summary:
More visiting relatives and a few drinks, followed by a visit to the shops to get some toothpaste (my gramps has false teeth so doesnt have any in his house haha). Followed by a gorgous family meal in a restraurant, serving raw meat that you cook yourself on a barbicue kinda appliance (in japan we normally have one large cooking plate that people pick from=survival of the fittest in a family haha).

<3 japan Smile

Why would you cook yourself..... Also, all you did was put a period in brackets... between Barbecue and kinda.... no longer making a sentence

Rob, you need to be in Japan when they release a new Final Fantasy game... I believe they have an entire National Holiday whenever a new one is released because they know nearly everyone will try to get off work....
